Common Application Issues with Conventional Tiles

Traditional impact-attenuating surfacing systems typically use pin connectors or plastic dowels. When installed correctly—with staggered joints and proper edging—these systems can hold together. However, they come with two major drawbacks: High labor intensity, and susceptibility to sub-base errors. Even well-compacted sub-bases can develop irregularities—something that occurs even with experienced landscape contractors. The result: tiles lift, overlap, or create hazardous gaps. Puzzle Mat 3D® eliminates these issues through its patented 3D interlock. The combination of its puzzle shape, intermediate elements, and knob-and-indentation technology creates a secure horizontal and vertical connection—without the need for edging restraints.

The 3D Solution

With Puzzle Mat 3D®, the typical challenges of conventional safety surfacing systems are a thing of the past. Installation is far easier than poured-in-place surfaces, and maintenance becomes significantly more efficient. Individual tiles can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the area. Because the elements hook together and form a unified system, the structure remains exceptionally stable. For this reason, Puzzle Mat 3D® is now used not only on playgrounds, but also in calisthenics zones, ball sports courts, and pedestrian walkways. At the core of its success is the patented 3D interlocking principle, which allows for secure system integration including corner and edge tiles—forming a long-lasting, modular composite system.
