Over the past several years, more and more customers have approached us wanting to use Puzzle Mat 3D® not only for outdoor calisthenics areas but also for ball sports such as soccer, basketball, and volleyball. We took this demand seriously and began testing the system in selected projects starting in 2018, followed by full laboratory testing. The results highlighted the system’s key advantages: true mobility, high water permeability, exceptional ball rebound and the extremely strong interlock of the Puzzle Mat 3D® connection.

Why Puzzle Mat 3D® Ball Sports Tiles?
PM3D® Ball Sports Tiles compensate for uneven ground. This means they can be installed on existing asphalt or concrete surfaces—even on old tennis courts that have already exceeded their service life. On permanent installations with gravel or crushed stone, the tiles also provide a major advantage: they lock firmly without edging and do not shift.
The tiles are TÜV-tested and comfortable underfoot. Made from robust recycled rubber, they offer excellent slip resistance and strong ball rebound according to DIN EN 12235 – 2013-12. Especially in basketball applications, these characteristics provide a clear advantage compared to artificial turf. Poured-in-place EPDM surfaces are significantly more expensive, permanently installed and far more difficult to repair than the PM3D® system.

Schäper Sportgerätebau GmbH is one of the leading experts in stadium construction and ball sport equipment. The mobile soccer courts we jointly developed set new standards in outdoor sports infrastructure. Instead of waiting for lengthy approvals, the courts can be installed temporarily almost anywhere.
Even when permanently installed, the PM3D® flooring preserves the benefits of a mobile, modular system. TÜV-certified safety, repositionable boards and adaptable field dimensions offer maximum flexibility. The small-sided fields can be configured individually or ordered as complete sets through Schäper.
Health and Sustainability
We are committed to manufacturing our products as sustainably as possible. To avoid production waste, quality deviations and the high energy consumption of older presses, we rely on a fully automated production line. A large share of our energy—especially in summer—comes from the solar plant installed on the roof of our new production facility.
Since our PM3D® system has recently been laboratory tested for joint protection and elasticity in health applications, consistent quality of our recycled granulate is extremely important. For this reason, we are upgrading our recycling machines in 2024 to maintain a high recycling quota, ensure full quality control from start to finish and minimize production waste.
Project Planning and Area Calculation
When planning a project, the first step is to define the intended use of the ball sport tiles. Beyond slip resistance, comfortable elasticity and certified safety performance, water permeability is a key factor. With a high permeability rate of up to 4 l/m² per second, PM3D® Ball Sport Tiles meet the requirements for permeable surfaces.
This significantly reduces approval barriers, particularly in urban environments. Water drains not only through the joints and the drainage layer underneath but also directly through the open-pore rubber granulate. As a temporarily used surface—for example on schoolyards or in front of shopping centers—approval is straightforward.
To communicate projects effectively and gain support from decision-makers, precise planning layouts are extremely helpful. Our in-house area planner is ideal for this purpose, allowing users to preview the final ball sport surface in the desired color. The planning sketch can be downloaded as a product-neutral PDF, including calculated CO₂ savings, for presentations to committees or funding partners.
